Despite new offerings from Garmin and others in the GPS Wrist Watch industry, the Garmin Forerunner 301 GPS Personal Training Device still attracts a lot of interest. The reason is because it can do so much and the price has come down so far (check price). Here is the feature list:

- Multi-sport (changes sport mode with a press of a button)
- Advanced workouts (create custom, goal-oriented workouts)
- Simple workouts (input time, distance and calorie goals)
- Pace alert (triggers alarm if you vary from preset pace)
- Time/distance alert (triggers alarm when you reach goal)
- Interval training (set up exercise and rest intervals)
- Customizable screen(s)
- rechargeable lithium-ion battery – 15 hours typical
- Water resistant
- GPS-enabled
For the current price, it would be hard to go wrong with this unit. The overall reviews are excellent – in fact most reviewers give it a 5 stars out of 5 and 76% gave it four stars or better. However, we think it’s always a good idea to take a closer look at some of the negative reviews to see if there are consistent complaints. On this unit, we noted a couple common issues amongst reviewers: 1) several found the heart rate monitor inconsistent; 2) some had trouble acquiring a satellite signal on startup or spotty reception during workout.
Newer units may be right for you, but if you’re looking for something in this price range with a large feature set, don’t for get about the Garmin Forerunner 301.
